Brunner Mine Trip

Yesterday we went to Brunner Mine Site.  We went with the whole class as we were trying to learn more about the story and the setting of where the book called The Mines Afire is set.  You should read this book, it is very interesting.

When we were there we got to see the coke ovens I didn't know that they use to mine coke too. We could also smell the sulphur and gas coming out of the mine (it was very gross).

I learned so much from the nice people who taught us about what happened there a long time ago. I found it so hard to believe that there used to be whole town in the spot where I was standing and it felt weird to think about it. Also it is still New Zealand's worst mine disaster to this day.

My favourite part of the day was the costumes and learning so much.

I think that everyone should come here a have a walk around the track and it is a good spot for a swim as well.

Here is some photos of the class...

Thank you for reading 👏😁🐭

The Mines Afire Cover Prediction

Kia Ora,
Today we got some questions to answer about the book called The Mines Afire, all we got to know is the cover a the blurb. On Monday we are going on a school trip to where the fire actually happened in Brunnerton that is not to far away from our school.  I am really looking forward to going there and learning a lot more about it what happend. I will make another blog post when I get back from the trip so I can show you a bit more about what I have learnt about the mine.

If you don't know much about Brunnerton I can tell you a bit that I know now.
There was a big fire in Brunnerton Mine in 1896 and about 62 people died in that mine, everybody that was working that day died. The youngest person to die was only 16!!! witch is very sad, the oldest person was about 72 years old. Brunnerton it the worst coal mine accident still in New Zealand to this day!!!!!

What's In the news this week...

Canterbury health people are warning the public of an outbreak of measles. 4 people have had measles in the region in just over a week. There are two people recovering in hospital but none were fully vaccinated.  Also an 18-year-old university student in Dunedin was confirmed to have measles on Friday. The woman was not thought to be immunised either. Most of the people getting measles are not young kids because most of the young kids are vaccinated.

I think it is very important to vaccinate because you can get very sick from measles.  What do you think about getting vaccinated?

It was possible people may not know if they are fully protected against measles, health officials say. (File photo)

What's Been In The News This Week...

Auckland’s transport authority has removed Lime scooters from the city for a week.

Lime scooters were taken off Auckland streets because a software problem that caused the wheels to lock up. The Council and Auckland Transport temporarily suspended them.  The Council chief said that there had been 155 braking incidents reported across the country, 92 of them were in Auckland. People have had a lot of injuries, including broken bones and head injuries, after falling from Limes.

I personally love the limes and I think it will help the environment but I can see how it can hurt and injuries people and there are lots of people and kids using them not just for transport.

Here are the limes.

This is someone who has fallen because of wheels locking.

Lime riders have reported serious injuries after the e-scooters' wheels locked up, sending them flying.

What do you think the council should do about the limes?
